Mosquito Pest Control

After the heavy rains of March and April it’s time for mosquitos! Mosquito eggs hatch when the ideal water conditions have been met. When a female mosquito reaches adulthood its time to find a blood meal. YOU! To stop this problem, you must treat where the mosquitoes live. During the heat of the day mosquitoes “roost” on the bottom of foliage found around your home or yard, and they will rest in the dark areas around your home. If you treat these areas the mosquitoes roosting there will die and any that try to return to your yard will also land on the treated surfaces. Mosquitoes in Northern Michigan

Mosquitoes are common, flying insects that can be found just about everywhere on Earth. There are over 3,500 different types of mosquitoes worldwide. Here in Michigan, we have about 55 different species. Not all of them carry diseases but most of them are a nuisance to us humans and our animals. The two most common species of mosquitoes found in our area are the Aedes Vexans and the Culex Pipiens. While the Aedes Vexans species can be irritating, they do not pose a serious threat as a major disease carrier. The Culex Pipiens species on the other hand have been known to carry diseases. The most common diseases among this species are St. Louis Encephalitis, West Nile Virus, and other Encephalitis Diseases.

West Nile Virus can cause serious illness that can be fatal while Encephalitis diseases cause a bacterial infection that could lead to inflammation of the brain.

To help with mosquito infestations we recommend removing all standing water in your yard, prune bushes and shrubs, thin out the density of all tree branches, keep your lawn well maintained by keeping the grass cut short, and clean up all debris and leaf piles.

Mosquito Nesting Characteristics

Mosquitos like to nest in areas that hold water for at least 7-10 days. Warm, and muggy climates are a mosquito’s preferred habitat. If you have standing water in your yard, there's a good chance mosquitoes are breeding in it.

How To Deal With Mosquitoes

There are a few ways you can treat mild cases of mosquitoes at home. You can light candles and torches that are infused with essential oils, utilize mosquito traps, and individual repellents. You can also try to help keep mosquitoes from nesting by getting rid of any standing water, clear out any debris, and place mosquito repellent plants around your home.
