Cicada Killer Wasp
The largest wasp that is native to Michigan is the Cicada killer. They prefer to make their nests in sandy, dry soil, with full sun exposure. There nests are holes in the ground with a mound of soil surrounding the nest. Although cicada killers are solitary wasps you will usually find more than one cicada killer making their nest in a suitable area. Although very large and intimidating, like other solitary wasps these insects do not want to sting you, and a sting is very rare. Promoting a well-established lawn can help to detour these wasps from choosing to make a home in your yard. We urge you to leave these wasps alone, as they do not want to bother you.
