Tick Encounters & Bites on the Rise in Northern Michigan

NIX Pest Solutions Northern Michigan Ticks

Northern Michigan residents are urged to take precautions against tick bites both on yourself and on your pets.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported that there were 878 reported cases of Lyme disease in 2021 that number is nearly double from 451 cases in 2020.

Before venturing out into the wilderness, take a little extra time to make sure you have some protections against these nasty creatures. We recommend long pants, socks, long sleeved tops and to tuck your pant legs into your shoes or socks. Reducing your area of exposed skin will lessen the chance that you get bit by a disease-carrying tick. Another thing that greatly reduces the risk of picking up ticks is insect repellent with at least 20% deet.

After coming in from the outdoors, its always a great idea to check yourself and your pets. Ticks like to crawl around on their host to find a preferred feeding spot which means even if your feet and legs were covered – one could have crawled up to an exposed skin spot.

Dogs and pets are really good at picking up ticks in their paws, legs and underside. Be sure to check your pets when coming in.
